Each year thousands of members schedule an appointment to meet with a Retirement Counselor at our offices in Frankfort. Most members visit our offices to review retirement estimates and complete the necessary paperwork to officially retire. Still others visit the retirement office to receive counseling on purchasing service credit and plan for their future retirement. Whatever the reason may be, there are several things you should know before making a visit to the retirement office.
An appointment is required. Schedule your appointment in advance.Appointments are available for 8:30, 10:00, 11:30, 1:30, and 3:00 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. These slots fill up quickly depending upon the time of year and the current backlog of requests. You can schedule your appointment up to three months in advance by contacting the KRS Call Center at the following phone numbers:
Phone Numbers
---
(502) 696-8800 (inside Franklin County)
1-800-928-4646 (outside Franklin County)
When you are making the appointment, be sure to note any retirement dates you are considering and if you are planning to purchase service credit.
Bring a photo ID with You. In order to protect the confidentiality of your retirement account, the retirement office requires all visitors who will be accessing account information to present photo identification upon arrival.
Bring copies of birth certificates. Even if you are years away from retiring, please bring a copy of your birth certificate to your appointment. If you are retiring and naming a single individual as beneficiary of your monthly retirement allowance, you will also need to provide a copy of your beneficiary's birth certificate. Your first retirement check cannot be issued until all birth certificates are on file with the retirement office.
Bring a copy of your last two pay stubs. In order to improve the accuracy of your estimate, please bring a copy of your last two pay stubs. If your pay stub does not include your accrued compensatory time and sick leave balance, you may want to provide additional information to verify your leave balances.
Lump-sum payments for compensatory time at retirement can be included in a member's final compensation which is used to determine monthly benefits.
Accumulated sick leave may be converted to additional months of service credit at retirement if your employing agency participates in a sick leave program approved by the retirement office. All KERS and SPRS employers and many CERS employers participate in an approved sick leave program.
Social Security Adjustment Option. The retirement systems provide various payment options in regard to your monthly retirement allowance. If you are planning to select one of the Social Security Adjustment Options, please provide an updated estimate of Social Security benefits you will receive at age 62 from the Social Security Administration.
Verification for service purchases. If you are planning to purchase service credit, be sure that the appropriate verification is on file with the retirement office before your appointment date. A Retirement Counselor cannot provide you with an official cost calculation unless the verification is available. If you are unsure of the verification needed, please contact the retirement office before your visit.
Prepare yourself. Office appointments are scheduled to last no more than 1 1/2 hours. The more you know about your benefits, the more productive your appointment will be. Take the time to review the Summary Plan Description and recent employee newsletters. You may also want to write down specific questions you have about your benefits to discuss with the Retirement Counselor during the appointment.
