WHI to Contact Retirees

Walgreens Health Initiative (WHI) serves as the pharmacy benefit manager for KRS Medicare Eligible retirees. Recently, WHI sent KRS a data file as an attachment in an unencrypted email sent to and received by the correct person at KRS. The file contains names, social security numbers, dates of birth and health insurance billing codes, but no private health information. The likelihood the data was compromised in this transmission is remote. The data file only contained information on members who were both Medicare eligible and used the retiree pharmacy benefit through WHI in 2007.

WHI has strict guidelines in place to protect client data and is taking corrective action on this incident. They will be sending individual letters explaining the situation in the next few days, and only affected members will receive notification.

WHI has established a toll free number to answer questions related to this incident. KRS members can reach a Walgreens representative by calling 1-866-292-9063.

Kentucky Retirement Systems takes its responsibility to protect the personal information of its members very seriously. In recent years, the Board has adopted formal policies regarding protection and encryption of data. Additionally, the Board has adopted a disclosure policy to notify members whenever there has been a potential exposure of their data, even though there are currently no statewide disclosure regulations in place mandating such disclosure. Our primary goal is to ensure quality service to our members along with complete confidentiality of their records.
